How did James Ritty's invention put an end to theft?

Many people hire family members in business, believing it guarantees the safety of their profits.
However, not everyone can employ their relatives, and sometimes the very person trusted simply due to kinship fails to live up to that expectations.
This issue has occupied the minds of entrepreneurs down to the present day and has driven them toward new inventions.
The creation of James Ritty, which we chronicled in our previous article, is a prime example of this.
In this article, we will explain how James Ritty’s cash register operated and how it prevented theft.
Once the entrepreneur James Ritty began using the first mechanical cash register in his cafe, bartenders became too afraid to even contemplate theft.
The front of the device featured keys indicating monetary amounts (cents and dollars). When a key was pressed, the sale amount appeared on a dial resembling the hands of a clock.
Both the customer and the bar owner could clearly see which key the bartender had pressed and how much money had been recorded.
This left the bartender with no opportunity to hide the cash.Inside the device was a concealed mechanical counter that automatically accumulated (added up) all the monetary entries throughout the day.
Later, Ritty introduced two vital innovations to the system:
1. The Bell Ring: Every time a key was pressed and a sale was registered, the machine made a loud "ding" sound.
This sound signaled to the bar owner that a transaction had taken place. If a bartender took money but failed to press the register key, the bell would not ring, and the bar owner would notice it immediately.
2. The Paper Tape: Every sale amount was recorded via perforations (punched holes) onto a paper roll installed inside the device.
At the end of the day, the bar owner removed the tape and cross-checked the total sum against the cash inside the drawer.
Thus, through this device, James Ritty put an end to theft and ensured that he remained the sole beneficiary of his own profits.
