How does not knowing your average check harm your business?

If you want to increase your sales, you must know what the average check (average order value) is.

By increasing the average check, you can boost sales without acquiring new customers.

Average check — the average amount of money a single customer spends when buying your product.

The formula to determine it: Average check = Total sales ÷ Number of customers.

For example, if 10 customers make a total purchase of 1,000,000 UZS: 1,000,000 ÷ 10 = 100,000 UZS. Thus, the average check equals 100,000 UZS.

If you do not know your average check:

Excess money is wasted on advertising

The cost of acquiring a new customer increases.
The revenue from that customer might be lower than the acquisition cost.
As a result, sales seem to grow, but profits decrease.

Cash shortages occur

There may be many customers.
If each buys very little, the revenue might look large.
However, money will run short for fixed expenses like rent and salaries.

Unnecessary goods pile up in the warehouse

You do not know which products sell together.
This leads to stocking too many wrong items.
Capital gets tied up in unsold inventory.

Salespeople miss opportunities

An employee only sells what the customer asks for.
They fail to suggest complementary or upgraded products.
Additional sales opportunities are completely lost.

Mistakes are made in pricing

A competitor drops their prices.
The entrepreneur rushes to lower theirs too. This panic reaction can drastically slash net profits.

Therefore, do not just ask “How much did I sell today?”, but also “How much did each customer buy on average?”.

Sometimes the easiest way to grow a business is not finding more customers, but offering more value to existing ones.
